Message From Our Senior Minster, Rev. Debbie Taylor

It’s hard to believe it’s been seventeen months since my husband, Tom, and I first arrived here from the Midwest. So much has happened at Unity of Beaverton since then. It is my pleasure to share just some of these highlights with you....

Our Constantly Campus Changes

We have been working very hard to improve our physical facility, staff needs, and growth needs. Deep cleaning and removal of old records, equipment and junk have been happening regularly to “get rid of the clutter” as we continue to raise our prosperity awareness. Additionally, every quarter, since early 2007, we have held “Love Your Church Days” to target specific areas for improvement. As our crowd of volunteers continues to increase, this new, yet significant tradition also continues.…  (see our calendar of events on our home page)

In May, 2008, the Board of Trustees, our congregation and I discussed the importance of replacing our tired roofs and general worn out exterior. We are extremely dedicated to having our outer sanctuary, as well as our Youth Ed. building, reflect what is happening in “our inner sanctuaries.” We are going to step out with strong faith and collective commitment as we replace both of these roofs by summer’s end. We know that the roof of a building symbolically represents a person’s higher consciousness. We will begin “Raise the Roof x 2” fundraising efforts immediately. This is such a time of great change, updates, and exciting growth. We hope you will keep us in prayer and come celebrate with us as we step forward into claiming our Oneness in community and co-creation.

Youth Education Director Hired

After 13 months of prayer, town halls, and four substantial donations, we hired Joyce Swift as our part-time temporary department director. Her position is funded at 10-15 hours/week. She has been with us since April, 2008 and has reorganized a great deal of the Youth Ed. building, as well as the Y.E. office. When it is appropriate, we will re-evaluate the program, numbers and future goals of Youth Ed., as we determine it’s promising future. In order to support multiple programs or changes, please do not stop offering your financial or volunteer support above your general tithe (not just in place of).  Another way to support our youth is to purchase our Unity Bucks, and a small percentage is passed on to the church—at no extra cost to you.

New Members

In 2007, we added thirty-six terrific, new members to our spiritual community!  We are delighted to have them blend their spiritual talents, as we seek everyone’s unique skills and spiritual gifts. In early 2008, we welcomed ten more members by sharing in their joyous induction ceremony. These fine members are all eligible to vote for the new board members at our next annual meeting in October. In early fall, we will make the five-week New Members class available again, as visitors continue to stream in wanting to join Unity Church of Beaverton.

Volunteer Opportunities

A Service Ministry was created to help volunteers “step into passionate service.”  Great big gratitude hugs goes to Katherine McAnulty for assuming coordination of this important role. Leadership teams have emerged (or been strengthened) for the following groups: Prayer, Youth Education, Worship Assistants, Office Support, Youth Education, Newsletter, Bookstore, Music, Youth of Unity (high school teens), Sound, Membership, USCIA (Unity Social Consciousness in Action), as well as Facilities & Landscaping.

Just recently, Rich Layton agreed to ‘head up’ the Membership Committee.  This brand new team will review how we welcome visitors, as well as how to integrate levels of volunteer service. Our churches growth strategies will be carefully reviewed and evaluated as well.

By this summer, we will see the emergence of an energetic fundraising committee. Through numerous events, pledges, drives, love offerings, and recognition of time and talents, we are looking forward to great fun within our fundraising team and increased community building.

12-step Groups—They’re Everywhere, everywhere

At Unity Church of Beaverton, we proudly work with several 12-step groups. We open our doors to Alcoholics Anonymous, Co-Dependants Anonymous, Sex Addicts Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, as well as hold a safe place for teens supporting each other as their parents face their own issues. Because of the high need for confidentiality, many who attend Unity have no idea of our level of 12-step support. Some of these groups have met weekly for over two decades.

Unity’s co-founder, Charles Fillmore, developed a close friendship with Bill Wilson (founder of AA and other 12-step programs). Before 12-step concepts were ever developed, Bill conferred with Charles about his desires to help people. Wandering through the 1,500-acre grounds at Unity Village (in Lee’s Summit, MO), many hours were spent entrusting Charles, while Bill manifested this powerful and effective recovery program. Because of their long-standing, close relationship, Charles and Bill discussed the critical importance in each step. The relationship between these two founders is held with great respect, as both were dedicated to self healing, accountability and spiritual transformation. I agree with Bill and Charles that Unity is a perfect place to begin again!

Moving Pastoral Care

Our pastoral care/outreach coordinator, Gail Key-Benson, has relocated from the bookstore desk into our library. This allows her to offer confidential pastoral appointments. She also has a place she can call her own. Helping people identify their own spiritual gifts, healings and transformation is one of the most important elements of our loving community. It is necessary for all people to feel safe enough to explore their hopes and dreams. (By the way, there is a distinct difference between psychological counseling and pastoral care, so please call the church to schedule your appointment and pre-determine who you should see.)  Please Note: Such appointments are paid for by your responsible love offerings, and are confidential.

Complying with a 21-yr. old Permit Compliance at Last!

In mid-December, 2007, it came to my attention that the Church had not yet achieved compliance with a 1986 permit. Once we got over that initial shock, our community kicked into high gear to get things done. First, it required that we place our garbage cans out of the neighbors view. So, we moved the containers from 6th Street inside the campus, moved a concrete curb, and then constructed a privacy fence.

Secondly, we were required to plant hedges around the parameter to block our parking lot from the view of our neighbors. Fifty volunteers came together, gave their time and energy to meet the March deadline, and blessed the campus with a variety of colorful shrubs that will do their job within a few years. Now, we have completed these requirements and are grateful for the campus improvements. Well done everyone!  At long last, the City says “Thumbs Up.  Great job!”

Our Own ‘Space’ Program

After months of deep discussion, the Winged Hearts Gifts & Books team decided to keep the bookstore in its current space. Much of the older inventory was cleared out. New vendors, books and diverse merchandise have been slowly introduced. This includes: great books by exciting, new authors; music CDs; beautiful cards; Japanese incense; journals; soaps; statues; jewelry, and “No Complaining” t-shirts and wrist bands, to name a few. We also added a cash stand, desk to increase appeal and traffic flow, and a new credit card scanning machine for speedy accuracy. People remark constantly how inviting and warm the room is, while they enjoy browsing and buying.

Our volunteer receptionists now enjoy their own office space, after previously being housed in the minister’s office. We have a desire for additional volunteers two days each week to answer phones, file, and help with various activities. Interested in helping us 2-4 hours a week?

Our 1920’s house, facing Watson Street (“Myrtle House,” named after Unity’s co-founder, Myrtle Fillmore), is awaiting completion of a conditional use permit. We plan to convert it into a cheery new meeting space for small classes and groups. Recently, Myrtle House received interior paint, furniture, curtains, and deep cleaning. While awaiting Myrtle’s future, we have turned this meeting space into a second residential rental, since the one half has already been rented for three years. Please hold us in prayer that the right course of action will make itself known for this special piece of property.

Good-bye Garage

In late 2007, volunteers came together and enthusiastically tore down our old, leaning garage.  Wood, shingles, glass, and nails were dismantled and recycled, disposed or donated to Habitat ReStore.  We then purchased a new and attractive storage unit.  Soon it will be given a fresh coat of paint and moved into its final location.

Closing Words…

Like I said, we’ve been very busy. I haven’t even talked about our wonderful newsletters; becoming a green campus; our dedication to service to our youth/ congregants/greater community; nor our upcoming classes, healing services and spiritual cinema nights. As we continue to expand our consciousness, we are attracting even more diverse, compassionate and committed people to our spiritual community and making life extremely enriching and active. Growth occurs at a community level, as well as independently, inside each heart, soul and mind. Now is the time to say “Yes!” to the Spirit at U of B.  Come get in on ‘the ground floor’ of positive changes as we manifest our dreams together.      Namaste.

Unity of Beaverton is pleased to introduce our senior minister, Rev. Debbie Taylor

(pictured here with her husband Tom)

Following is a brief introduction from Reverend Debbie:

Rev. Debbie Taylor is "on fire" with helping people live life, deepen inner connections, and enjoy it. Through Unity's practical tools of Christianity, Native American spirituality, the silence, art, nature and many other paths, Rev. Debbie embraces her path--and all those she comes in contact with. She is quick to remind people that transformation can come experientially, playfully, easily and safely.  She looks forward to growing in love with her new family and "being about her Creator's business."
Rev. Debbie is married to her soul mate and best friend, Tom, of 27 years. He has been offered a position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Portland. They will also travel with Sassy (an 8-10 year old Aussie Cattle/Beagle mix, and Celli (their 2 year old singing canary). Two of their three sons (Alex, 20 and Nathan, 18) will remain in the Kansas City area, for now, in order to complete their first two years of college.  It is Rev. Debbie's hope that they will fall passionately in love with Portland and the Northwest--desiring to change schools sooner. Tom and Debbie's oldest son, Josh (24), lives in the windy city of Chicago, and plans a visit as soon as "the parentals" are ready. All three sons, as well as family, friends and UCOP congregants are delighted that Debbie is 'stepping off of the cliff.'  After 20 years, they regret losing the Taylor's yet, feel Unity of Beaverton is a perfect church to earn her wings.

Rev. Debbie's mantra is Gandhi's comment, "We must be the change, we wish to see in the world!" she reaches out, across the miles, and encloses a warm hug to each and every one of you.   Namaste, Rev. Debbie
